평양의 중구역 대동문동 대동문 옆에 걸려있는 평양종은 1726년에 제작된 조선시대 범종이다. 종의 무게는 2만2천5백2십근 15량(12t 914kg) 정도이며, 높이 310cm이다. 종의 재료는 평양성내 백성들로부터 거두어들인 주철, 생동, 유기, 철 등이다. 이 평양종은 당시 객사였던 대동관 앞에 종각을 설치하고 걸었다. 지금의 종각은 1827년에 고쳐지은 것이다.
